Many owners of Chinese Xiaomi smartphones are faced with the problem of low audibility in the headset speakers. Naturally, the question arises: how to increase the sound in headphones on Xiaomi and is this a hardware problem?
Comments:
- When I turn on the headphones on Xiaomi, the music plays too quietly. I thought the problem was with the headset, but it turned out it had nothing to do with it.
- The sound periodically disappears and appears when I connect the headset to Xiaomi. The same thing happens with the new one. Please tell me what to do?
- Since I bought my Xiaomi, the sound in the speakers and headphones has been too quiet. Probably some kind of software limitation. Where can I remove it?
How to change the speaker volume through the engineering menu
Starting with version MIUI 9.2, the engineering menu that was previously completely changed. Now this menu is used to test the components of the phone (checking for dead pixels, microphone, speakers, cameras, etc.). Changing system settings on Xiaomi in MIUI 9.2 and higher through the engineering menu will no longer work.
This method works successfully on MIUI 8 and MIUI 9 (first releases).
To go to the engineering menu you need:
- Go to settings - “About phone”.
- Scroll down a little to the “Kernel version” line.
- Click on this item 5 times . The CIT menu (formerly Hardware Tests) will open.
- Test the required elements.
You can also get to the engineering menu the old fashioned way through calls:
- Open "Challenges".
- Enter code *#*#6484#*#*.
- After entering the last character you will be automatically redirected to this menu.
Setting up smooth adjustment
If you notice that after one click on the volume rocker the sound has become significantly quieter (louder), then the Value values have large gaps. We go to the Xiaomi engineering menu, which is in the paragraph earlier, and select the item in which the problem is observed. The Level value is the number of volume levels. Let's say our Level 14 value is 255, we need to lower each subsequent value by 12 units. Accordingly, Level 13 will be equal to 243, and Level 12 will be equal to 231, etc. After this, the volume should change more smoothly on your device.
Increasing the speaker volume
Proceed with this procedure only if you are confident in your technical knowledge; it is better to make a backup! If your gadget malfunctions after this process, contact the service center immediately.
In MIUI 9.5 and higher, you only need to edit the “ mixer paths” . There is no need to download anything, as you may accidentally replace important system files. Go straight to editing.
For this method to work, you must have Ruth rights. If you have not received them yet, then read our instructions for obtaining Root rights on Xiaomi phones.
Editing the mixer_paths_tesha file
To work, you will need any explorer with access to system files (in our example we use ES Explorer ). We find the item “Root Explorer”, go to it, using the search we look for the file mixer_paths_tesha. Open the editor.
A system code window will open in front of us, we need to find these lines:
The values 11 will be highlighted in red, change them to 16, save the file and reboot the device.
If these lines are not found, then we search using the words: HPHL Volume .
Sound parameters using the engineering menu
The bulk of Android devices have unknown innovations, such as the engineering menu. It is usually used for final setup of a smartphone. Using it, you can examine the operation of sensors, study important departments, change the way you turn buttons off and on, rename and change keys, and much more. These tests are hidden from many users at the initial stage, in order to avoid confusing the settings during the learning process.
The engineering menu makes it possible to work with the sound of the gadget and adjust the increasing ringing of the bell. There is also a way to return your smartphone to factory settings and check the operation of all its functions.
Changing the phone region (without root rights)
Due to the fact that some countries have certain restrictions on the level of noise produced, Xiaomi must comply with these laws in order to sell its phones in their territories. Therefore, if after changing the system files nothing has changed, or you want to increase the volume of the speaker without root rights, we recommend using this method.
The instructions are very simple, we only need 2 minutes of time and standard phone settings.
- Let's go to settings.
- Next, go to “Advanced Settings”.
- Now click on “Region”.
- We change our region to one of the available ones : North Korea, Taiwan or India.
- We check the volume after changing the region, it is advisable to restart the phone.
- If the problem is solved, we adjust the time zone.
Note! If your model supports face unlocking, this feature may not work in some regions.
What affects the sound in our mobile phone?
As we say, there are many factors, but they mainly depend on the options that the smartphone manufacturer offers us to be able to customize the sound to our liking. Whether your cell phone is better or worse in terms of sound can be mitigated by using these types of effects. And it is in MIUI 12 that we can access different sound settings, which the Chinese firm describes as “ Sound Effects ”, to give a personalized touch to the sound of the terminal.
Well, these sound effects are especially indicated for use with headphones, which is obviously the point where we can perceive the sound quality better than in the case of speakers, which in many cases only transmit the sound of a monkey. Although in this case the sound is clearly perceived through separate channels. When we start the phone and do not adjust the sound at all, it is normal that we listen to everything with a rather flat profile, which in many settings we define as “flat” and which usually goes by default in those equalizers .
In the case of Xiaomi mobile phones, thanks to MIUI, we have a large number of parameters to configure so that the sound is tailored to our needs and tastes. Even if we can check, we will be able to adjust the sound and volume at our age , because, as you know, the older we get, the worse we hear. These Xiaomi "sound effects" options offer us to customize various parameters.
Increasing headphone volume
This method partially repeats the one described above, but now we will change the values for the sound volume in the headphones.
- Open Root Explorer, go to the “Root Explorer” line.
- Find the file mixer_paths (path:/vendor/etc/mixer_paths.xml), open it.
- We search for the string.
- If you have a European region, then you need to change the value from 72 to 82 (it can be higher, but make changes several points at a time).
- After this you need to restart your phone.
If none of the above helps, there is only one way out - the help of a specialist.
A couple of tips:
- Look at what mode you have . It is quite possible that they switched to “Quiet”, “Meeting” by mistake. It is best to set it to “Standard” or “Outdoor”, then vibration is added. Don't use Airplane mode unless necessary. Yes, when you turn it on, there are no ads in applications and unnecessary spam messages, but the volume may deteriorate.
- Check if there is contact between the headphones and the device . Since the cause of interference may be a faulty headphone or dirty connectors.
- And the simplest thing: set the volume scale to maximum . Volume up button and you're done.
Setting up sound in headphones on MIUI 12
Miyuai 12 has a Sound Effects section. This item allows you to slightly improve the sound without root rights and additional software. You just need to check the “Improve Mi sound” checkbox and select the headset model below: both regular earbuds and in-ear headphones, as well as branded devices from Xiaomi, are supported. (Screenshot 5)
The system equalizer is available in this section. Go to the tab of the same name and select a mode at the top - by default, rock, jazz, classical music, dance or electronic, hip-hop, pop, blues, country and metal. You can also set your own parameters. To do this, simply move the sliders and listen to how changing frequencies affects the sound. (Screenshot 6 and 7)
We figured out how to increase the volume of headphones on Xiaomi and Redmi. Some points are also suitable for devices running “pure” Android: Mi A1, Mi A2 (Lite) and Mi A3. What methods do you know to improve sound?
How to increase the volume on Xiaomi on different models
After updating your Xiaomi to MIUI 9, you can increase the volume using any of the methods. Previously, it was possible to download files with settings through recovery, but now it is better to change them using Explorer.
Mi Max 3
If you have global firmware, then there is one quick way. But you need Root and extended recovery - TWRP. Download the file AudioBoostEnable.zip (enter in the search and download from 4pda). These are the settings of the Chinese firmware, there are simply no sound restrictions. Everything is set within reason, and the difference in sound is clearly felt. Tested on MIUI 8.6.1.0.
Redmi 3S, 3X
Download the audio mod (also download Sound_Mod.zip ). Thanks to the collaboration of forum members, lengthy tests and settings, a golden mean in sound was found (tested for headphones). This point can be considered universal, and can be applied even to more serious Xiaomi models.
Redmi 4X, 4A
We go to Google Play, enter the name Sound Booster (Volume Boost) , download, customize it to your liking and enjoy the good sound.

Increase volume via Recovery
All Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones have a system recovery, but you cannot use it to increase the volume. This procedure is carried out only through custom recovery: TWRP or CWM. An unlocked bootloader is required to install this software.
Do you already have custom recovery installed? Then you need to download a special patch to improve the volume and flash it. Patches can be downloaded from a trusted site, for example, the 4pda forum or XDA-Developers.
Let's look at the procedure using TWRP as an example:
- Put your smartphone into recovery mode. To do this, turn it off and wait a few minutes. Then hold down the power and volume up button.
- A menu will appear on a black background with gray squares. Tap the first “Install” tile.
- Using the built-in file manager, specify the path to the previously downloaded archive with the patch.
- Swipe to confirm. Wait for the file to install.
- Go back and click "Reboot". The phone will reboot into normal mode and you can check the sound volume.
Problems with the microphone on Xiaomi, what should I do?
One of the problems that smartphone owners sometimes encounter is a non-functioning or poorly functioning microphone. The same applies to Xiaomi gadgets from the famous Chinese manufacturer.
It may be that the interlocutor cannot hear you at all, although there are no problems with his speech, he can be heard as before. If you simply blow into the microphone, the interlocutor will hear a hiss. Why might this happen?
Microphone Problem: Solving Simple Problems
Some users believe that similar problems with the phone can occur after updating its firmware. In fact, this is not the case, and even auto-updates have nothing to do with it. This problem is often physical in nature, although there may actually be several causes. And if you have some skills and knowledge, you will be able to solve this issue yourself.
Don't forget the following: a Xiaomi smartphone has not one, but two microphones, and the second one performs a very important function. Its responsibilities include suppressing extraneous noise, and then the sound during a conversation will be cleaner. For example, this could be street noise, wind swaying trees, etc.
So, what physical problems can affect the microphone's performance, and how can you fix it yourself?
- It happens that when you buy a smartphone, you immediately buy a case for it. If it is chosen incorrectly, it may cover the microphone, so you need to change the case or make an additional hole in the purchased one.
- Same problem, only the case covers the second microphone. For this reason, the interlocutor’s ear will begin to pick up all extraneous sounds during a conversation. The problem is solved exactly as in point No. 1.
- Another reason is poor coverage and this affects communication. There is nothing you can do here, you just need to wait until you find yourself again where the coverage is much better.
- Something may be stuck to the microphone or small debris may have gotten into it. It happens that the user hid a note under the case and it simply covered the microphone.
- It happens that bad sound appears when talking with only one interlocutor. Then the problem is with his smartphone.
- When the interlocutor has an echo in his mobile phone, then you need to check in your phone whether the noise reduction function is disabled or not?
But in some cases, the reason may be in the device itself, so you just need to reflash the smartphone. How to do this correctly?
Change region
This method is the simplest of those listed. But it is only suitable for increasing the volume in headphones. Necessary:
- open the settings menu;
- go to the “Advanced settings” tab;
- select “Region”;
- set "Taiwan";
- reboot the phone.
After this, the volume in the Xiaomi Redmi headphones will automatically increase. You can also try using third-party applications from the Play Store. But you will have to select them depending on the individual parameters of the smartphone.
Causes of bad sound
There are several objective reasons, they were collected by me from independent sources, and my own modest observations complete the picture.
- Already mentioned above, the average volume of the earpiece, microphone, loudspeaker, in short, all attributes of the smartphone’s audio system. The user will receive it along with a brand new device. Sometimes the parameters are so low that the sound is barely audible.
- Firmware bug. Either it sits initially in MIUI, or it arrives in an update by air. From a series of unforeseen and unpredictable errors, from which you cannot protect yourself initially, you need to correct them after the fact.
- Hardware failure. The most likely reason as a percentage of all others. Divided into several types:
- When a Xiaomi phone falls from a height, we get mechanical damage that is invisible to the eye. You may not immediately feel or notice;
- poor contact in the headphone jack.
The sound becomes intermittent, quiet, and occasionally disappears. One version is that water got into the nest. The easiest way to diagnose is in the following way: try changing the position of the plug in space, if you can find a certain position in which everything gets better, and when changed, it disappears, then you are on the right path, comrades. To the master, to the service center; - headphones are broken. A whole bunch of surprises are expected here: a broken wire, poor contact in the plug, water in the speakers. Eliminated by replacement method (the simplest);
- Your phone is full to capacity. The internal memory is bursting at the seams, the device works with strange freezes and bugs. The mistakes are pouring out like buckets of them. Possible course of events when the smartphone is 100% loaded. This also has something to do with sound.
- The icons in the curtain were accidentally pressed - no sound, flight. Look carefully at the status bar, everything is in front of you.
- The source file you are listening to, for example music, is of poor quality. Check all audio listening modes and determine the root cause. Do not draw conclusions based on one reproduced item.
