Screen design and performance

The watch case is made of plastic with a stainless steel metal frame. It is slightly narrower than the Sport model, but the Huawei Watch 2 Classic cannot be called ultra-thin. For a narrow wrist, the gadget may be too massive. And also the two protruding physical keys on the side will constantly touch the cuffs of the sleeves.

The bezel is located on the front side. Unlike the Sport version, it is less bulky and does not show fingerprints.

Compared to the first generation Huawei Watch, this model has slightly lower strap lugs - this makes the design ergonomic and provides a tighter fit to the hand, which is necessary for accurate measurement of indicators during training.

The strap is leather with a brand logo on the clasp, which gives the watch a more businesslike look compared to the Sport model. The Classic version looks quite appropriate not only when jogging or in the gym, but also in the office.

The lower part of the strap has a water-repellent coating. If you wish, you can replace a worn strap; fortunately, there are a whole lot of them on the market in different colors.

The screen diagonal is 1.2 inches, resolution – 390 by 390 pixels. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass and is scratch-resistant. AMOLED matrix. There is an oleophobic coating and automatic brightness adjustment.

Thanks to the high resolution, the screen provides a very high-quality, clear, non-pixelated picture. The information on the display is easy to read even in direct sunlight.

Price

As for the price, you can buy the Huawei Watch GT sports watch in two versions. Options available for sale:

  1. $290 for the classic version with silver case and brown strap
  2. $230 for the sports version with black case and silicone strap

In Russia, the recommended price at the time of writing the review is 14,990 rubles. And on Aliexpress, the watch is available for pre-order at a price of $253 for the Classic model and $223 for the Sport version.

In Ukraine, the first batch imported into the country was already sold out even before the start of sales. Pre-orders for the next shipment are now open at select electronics stores. Price - from 5999 UAH to 6999 UAH.

Watch functionality

The main difference between the Huawei Watch 2 Classic Gray and the Sport 4G version is the absence of a SIM card slot, i.e. the gadget is not equipped with an LTE module. For the Russian market, such watches are supplied with the prefix leo bx9. The positive aspect in this case can only be considered a longer operating time due to energy savings. But it’s worth noting that the price for the Classic and the Huawei Watch 2 Sport 4G are the same.

There are two buttons to the right of the screen. They are programmable as desired. By default, the top button is to open the application menu, the bottom button is to start a sports training. For example, you can launch an application for receiving messages or other functions that are most in demand by the user from the button.

The touch screen responds to gestures. For example, a long press on the home screen opens downloaded watch faces that you can swipe left and right and select with a simple tap. By swiping up on the screen, you can expand the notification. By moving down you can hide it or open access to quick settings. Swipe left to clear a notification, exit a menu, or return to the home screen. Moving to the right opens the menu.

Thanks to a special application, you can choose the watch face to your taste and change it according to your mood several times a day.

Huawei Smart Watch 2 Classic has a built-in speaker and microphone. So you can make and receive calls from your watch. There is no headphone jack. Need a wireless headset. In addition, the watch is quite convenient to use as a remote control for the player. You can use them to switch tracks. Disadvantage: you can't change the music volume.

When receiving a notification (SMS, alarm clock, message from social networks), the watch vibrates.

Smartwatch Huawei Watch - review

Smartwatch Huawei Watch - review

All kinds of “smart” watches are my topic: I wear them myself, and I also constantly study all sorts of new models.

I first saw a watch from Huawei in March of this year: first they were presented at a presentation, and then I had the opportunity to hold a sample in my hands at the company’s closed stand. The watches were not demonstrated at the main stand, and the company said that they would not appear in the near future: most likely, closer to the end of the year.

And so it happened: the watches appeared in stores only around November-December. And since March, many interesting options from competitors have entered the market.

At the time of the presentation of watches from Huawei, they looked the most stylish of all - at least that’s the impression I got when I held this model in my hands: a steel case and a mesh steel strap. Next to it, the LG G Watch R, looking like plastic (although it also has a metal body), looked like a toy for geeks, and Huawei Watch looked like a pretty decent watch, and not a geek craft.

At the same exhibition, LG showed its LG Watch Urbane in a metal case, and this watch was already in stores by summer. Well, let's not forget about the Motorola Moto 360 - as far as I remember, this was the first round watch in a steel case. (Although I really didn’t like the watches from Motorola due to a couple of their more than strange engineering solutions.)

But Huawei Watch didn’t come out and didn’t come out. Meanwhile, users were promised three watch case options and three strap/bracelet options. Cases: “gold” (metal painted gold), steel, black. Straps/Bracelets: Solid metal, mesh metal and leather (brown and black).

Interestingly, there is still no gold version on the market. In Europe they sell steel ones with three types of straps and black ones with two types (massive steel and leather), in Russia they are generally presented only with a steel version with a leather strap and a black version with a massive steel bracelet.

The price of this watch is, to put it mildly, surprising to say the least. Because a steel case with a leather strap in Russia sells for 29,900 rubles (in Europe - for €380, that is, for the same money). At the same time, almost exactly the same in appearance, operating system, and capabilities, the LG Watch Urbane in Russia is sold for 19,989 rubles. A third cheaper!

The Russian representative office of Huawei kindly provided me with an option with a steel case and a massive steel bracelet to study, so let’s see whether this watch is worth that kind of money or not.

Huawei Watch Classic is a smart watch in a stainless steel case with a steel bracelet.

We will compare the characteristics with the main competitor - LG Watch Urbane. Those have a slightly smaller display (1.3″), a larger battery capacity (410 mAh), half the weight (!) and a third less price. The rest of the characteristics are exactly the same.

Contents of delivery

As usual for top gadgets from Huawei, the packaging is solid and stylish.

The inside is absolutely beautiful: a Huawei Watch is lounging on a soft sofa surrounded by a luxurious interior.

Cool packaging. However, it’s not the packaging that really interests us. But it’s nice to hold one in your hands. And it looks more than solid as a gift.

The delivery set is expectedly simple: USB-microUSB cable, power adapter, cradle.

Appearance and features

Everything is so steely and brutal. Metal and glass. The quality of materials and finishing is very good. The control button is located on the right side, not strictly to the right, but closer to the top of the dial.

Side view.

Bottom cover: in the center there is a heart rate sensor, on the side there are contacts for connecting to the cradle (charging, access from a computer).

The cradle here was done, in my opinion, rather poorly. It is round, without sides, with a magnet and protruding contacts. In theory, when the watch is placed on this cradle, the mother contacts of the watch case should find the masculine protruding contacts of the cradle and merge with them in ecstasy. But in practice this happens infrequently: you need to watch very carefully so that the contacts find each other (there are no sides) and the watch starts charging.

This annoyed me. It is not clear why it was necessary to pervert it so much. Did you want to do it elegantly, like Apple laptops, where the power adapter is magnetic? Well, Apple has worked this out down to the smallest detail - it’s impossible to miss. But here it’s easy. In the first couple of days, my watch took half a day to charge, as I missed it all the time. Then I kind of got the hang of it, but it’s still very inconvenient because you have to carefully monitor it all the time. And still, during charging, the slightest shake of the table could cause the watch to fly off its contacts. Madhouse.

Compare with the cradle from LG. It has the appropriate sides, with the help of which the watch fits onto the contact group in a completely unambiguous, easy and simple manner. And here it’s even impossible to confuse the sides, because the sides are different in size. The developers did not show off and did everything wisely: it is very convenient to use.

Well, let’s compare these watches by design. Here it must be said that watches from Huawei look more stylish. However, this model with a massive metal bracelet weighs like a brick - as much as 134 grams. This weight seems too much to me, I can’t wear a watch like this. But these are my personal preferences, there are people who like weighty watches. Moreover, Huawei has two more strap options: lightweight metal and leather.

Here is the clock in the switched on state.

What is the obvious advantage of the Huawei Watch - its bracelet is attached to the body in a completely standard way. That is, if you want to use any other watch bracelet, you can easily replace it yourself. This number will not work with the LG Watch Urbane; the bracelet is sealed tightly there.

Device operation

Actually, there’s not much to say about the operation of the device. Standard Android Wear is installed here, which works as expected: Huawei, unlike Motorola, did not distort the options and remake the options in its own way or disable them altogether.

Therefore, if the “Do not turn off the display” option is enabled, it does not turn off for some time (about 15-20 minutes). If nothing happens to the watch for 15-20 minutes (that is, it just lies on the surface), then the display turns off - to save money. The LG Watch does exactly the same thing.

Huawei has made several of its own watch faces, but this watch face is installed by default.

It looks very good, but it has a completely unattractive sleep mode, so I didn't like it.

I like Chronos Gold and Chaiman Gold from LG so much (as far as I understand, they cannot be installed in other smartphones) that I only use them - despite the fact that I have purchased a couple of dozen watch faces with various settings.

Huawei Watch's pulse is measured in the same way as other smartwatches with a similar sensor: on a dry hand it is measured more or less normally, on a sweaty hand (during sports) it is very bad.

(You can read about the operation of the corresponding version of Android Wear in my review of the LG Watch Urbane, because here everything is almost the same.)

Battery life

Here, compared to the LG Watch Urbane, the battery is a quarter less capacious (although the body is larger and heavier) and the display is slightly larger.

The battery life in active mode (connecting to a smartphone, receiving notifications), but with the option to turn on the screen when shaking your hand turned off (it eats up the battery greatly) was two days. Same as LG Watch Urbane.

With the shaking mode enabled - about a day and a half.

But they charge in about 30-40 minutes at a current of 0.3-0.4 A. But they need to be charged from their own (or similar) adapter, because when the cradle is connected to a computer USB port, charging is much slower.

Observations during operation and conclusions

During the testing period, the watch worked reliably, there are no complaints here.

In some reviews I came across a mention of automatic brightness adjustment, which surprised me greatly, since there is no automatic adjustment here: neither a sensor nor a corresponding setting in the options.

But, in fact, smart watches hardly need automatic adjustment - their range of settings is quite narrow.

This watch has a good maximum brightness, but in the sun this doesn’t help: the screen in ambient mode “blinds” a lot, like that of competing watches. They haven't overcome this issue yet. If you turn on the active mode, then something becomes visible on the display, but it is also difficult to see something. However, I compared this watch with the LG Watch Urban - the Huawei Watch has a slightly better image in direct sunlight.

Developers and reviewers especially emphasize the fact that the display here is covered with sapphire glass. And I’ll tell you this: what the hell is a sapphire crystal for such a watch, especially if it increases its price by 150 dollars?!!

Why does a $250 watch need sapphire crystal? This isn't Audemar Piguet for $5 thousand? To prevent the glass from scratching? So my LG Watch Urban, which I use in the tail and mane, has not yet had a single scratch.

Maybe this is done so that the watch can live normally for 5-10 years? So, firstly, the mechanism will die in a maximum of a year or two, and secondly, who will wear such a watch for 5-10 years? The average user changes their smart watch at least once a year, because more interesting and advanced models are coming out all the time. And all sorts of geeks like me change their watches every 3-6 months. Well, why, pray tell, do we need sapphire glass, which increases the cost by a third, because there is simply nothing else to increase the price by that much?!! So this is actually not a good idea in my opinion. There is no balance in such a decision.

Now let's list the pros and cons of this gadget.

Pros:

  • good design;
  • three body options;
  • three strap/bracelet options;
  • the ability to install any strap/bracelet;
  • sapphire glass (not to mention the price);
  • beautiful packaging (for gifts, for example);
  • normal operation of Android Wear.

Minuses:

  • the price is one third higher than its closest competitors;
  • too much weight;
  • entered the market late and not all models are there yet;
  • extremely inconvenient cradle (when used with a bracelet).

Draw your own conclusions. If you choose the option with a leather strap or a light metal bracelet, the watch will not be too heavy, but will look more stylish than the same LG Watch Urbane. However, such a watch, by the way, will cost 35 thousand rubles (€450), which, in my opinion, is a completely absurd price. Well, given the terribly inconvenient cradle, in my case the question doesn’t even arise: should I change my LG G Watch Urbane to a Huawei Watch or not. I'll make do for now. Although I like the design of Huawei Watch better.

Well, one last thing. Now less famous Chinese companies are entering the market for such watches. They offer decent smartphones with really good characteristics for 12-15 thousand (I have a lot of reviews), and their “smart” watches come with quite normal characteristics.

Some time ago, there were all sorts of cheap “smart” watches on the Chinese market (there are still plenty of them), which, of course, there was no point in buying - they used absolutely terrible matrices and their own shells.

But now there are already watches with the characteristics of the same flagships from LG, Lenovo, Huawei, but they cost the same 11-14 thousand rubles, and not 20 thousand, and especially not 30 thousand.

For example, the same Elephone Smart Watch. (They are now entering the market and accepting pre-orders.)

On Android Wear, they look stylish, 1.5″ display 320x320, MTK2601 chip, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB memory, 400 mAh battery, weigh 60 grams. Price - 8 thousand rubles. 8 thousand, Petya! Not 20, not 30 thousand!

Yes, of course, they will still need to be tested. But looking at their smartphones, I’m almost sure that if not now, then very soon there will be quite decent “smart” watches on the market at these prices.

Mlais offers something very similar for the same money, and other manufacturers offer something similar.

So, “smart” watches for 30 thousand or more are, in my opinion, a complete utopia. Competition in this sector, as with smartphones, will be fierce. Yes, in fact, it is already there.

Upd: It turns out that the LG G Watch Urbane strap can also be replaced independently or in a workshop. It's not very easy, but it can be done - here's the video:

Upd2: I changed the strap of this watch to a simple leather one. It immediately became much better: the watch itself is not heavy, with a simple leather strap it fits perfectly on the hand - here it is next to the LG G Watch Urbane.

Well, it turned out that with such a strap, magnetic cradle charging works quite normally: since nothing interferes with the watch case, it sits on the cradle without problems and does not fly off during charging. That is, my complaints relate to the option when the watch is used with a bracelet (especially a massive one), and when the watch is with a strap, everything is in order with the cradle.

Sports functions

The pre-installed Huawei Wear app is designed for use during workouts. Including jogging, swimming, etc. The application interface is intuitive. Heart rate, distance traveled, fat burning, aerobic and anaerobic load are displayed. Compliance with standards and the level of training effectiveness are monitored.

The application allows you to use ready-made training programs in real time. The virtual trainer will tell you when to speed up, slow down, and complete the workout. The training program can be compiled individually, based on your indicators. The watch shows the results of your workout and gives advice on recovery time after it.

Heart rate measurement is carried out constantly, including during sports and during sleep. You can view a graph of your heart rate changes over six hours.

You can plot your jogging or cycling route on a map using GPS, without using your smartphone. All statistics are automatically uploaded to the paired phone after completing the workout.

GPS

Huawei Watch GT Active is equipped with the coveted GPS sensor. With it, the watch will be able to collect data about your movement, even when you do not take your smartphone with you. It turns out that while jogging you can leave your heavy mobile device at home, the smart watch will do everything for it, and the application will display the distance you have traveled.

GPS turns on and off automatically. When a smartphone is nearby, the watch uses its sensor; when a mobile device is not nearby, it uses its own.

The system supports 11 training modes; you must select the desired one manually in the training menu. There are many metrics, each described in detail in the Huawei Health application. The range of training modes is meager. For example, the Samsung Galaxy Fit fitness bracelet records as many as 90 types of exercises, six of them are automatically recognized. However, the watch beats this advantage with a GPS sensor. What is more important, training modes or movement tracking, decide for yourself based on your priorities.

Android Pay and NFC contactless payment

Among other things, Watch 2 Classic is also a smartwatch with NFC. The built-in chip and Android Pay app let you pay with just the flick of your wrist.

To configure, you must perform the following steps:

  • the watch must be connected to a smartphone with Android OS (the presence of an NFC module on the phone is optional);
  • from Google Market, install the Android Pay application on your watch (if it was not installed automatically);
  • open the application on the watch and configure it (enter the pin code for the screen lock and add cards previously activated on the phone);

How to use?

  • NFC must be enabled;
  • open the Android Pay application on the watch (double-click the bottom button) and select the desired card;
  • bring your watch to the contactless payment terminal and wait for the receipt.

In addition, the watch may ask you to enter a PIN code, this depends on the terminal. It should also be taken into account that not all cash registers are configured correctly for contactless payment acceptance. In this case, you will have to get a card.

For all this miracle there is no need to connect to the Internet! And if the card is activated on the watch, then a connection with the phone is also not needed.

Battery life

The HUAWEI Watch GT 2 Classic was comfortable to wear. They weren't too bulky on the wrist. It feels significantly lighter on the wrist compared to other smartwatches we've used before. The user interface is smooth and responsive without too many noticeable glitches.

During our review, battery drain was around 10% per day. This battery drain was obtained while tracking heart rate and sleep monitoring, as well as raising the wrist to wake the screen and without tracking any activity using the built-in GPS. When adding a lock screen, which is an optional, always-on mode with a choice of analog or digital display, consumption increased to about 15% per day.

The watch is charged using a round magnetic charger

As you'd expect, using GPS drains the battery much faster but you can still get up to 30 hours of use. When it comes to charging, the white plastic USB-C charging disc automatically snaps onto the back of the watch in the correct position.

The lack of Qi wireless charging seems a little odd considering Huawei's latest flagship phones offer reverse wireless charging. However, thanks to magnets, the watch remains securely connected to the contacts. We found that it only takes about 1.5 hours to fully charge the watch.

Garmin Fenix 6 – premium fitness tracker review

Autonomy

The battery capacity is 420 mAh, there is a fast charging function. In half an hour the battery is half charged, in an hour - 94%.

If the device is used exclusively as a watch (to check the time and view notifications), then it can work without recharging for about two days. Overnight, the loss of battery capacity will be 10%. During a workout with the heart rate monitor and navigator turned on, the battery is discharged by a quarter in an hour. Thus, the charge is enough for four hours of training.

In energy saving mode, only showing the time and working as a pedometer, the watch will last more than ten days. It's easy to switch between modes. If you notice that the battery is almost empty, and there is no place or inconvenience to recharge, you can always switch to economy mode.

Huawei Watch 2 Classic: user reviews

Most users note the high functionality of the gadget; the reviews left online are mostly positive. The disadvantages include the traditionally thick case for watches of this brand, some massiveness and the lack of LTE.

According to consumers, these smart watches are not suitable for professional athletes, but are optimal for most users leading an active lifestyle.

Athletes should pay attention to the Huawei Watch 2 Sport model. And for those who value a non-trivial and bright design, Huawei Porsche Design is suitable.

Possibilities

The watch is compatible with smartphones running iOS and Android. To pair, you will need the proprietary Huawei Health application. You can download it from the Apple Store and Google Play.

Sleep monitoring TruSleep 2.0 can recognize sleep phases and make recommendations for improving it. So, if a cat interferes with sleep at night or the deep sleep phase is too short, this will not go unnoticed.

The watch can not only count the number of steps, but also warn the owner about a lack of activity, for example, after just an hour of sitting in a chair in front of the TV. Call notifications arrive instantly, and short messages from social networks and SMS are convenient to read directly on the smartwatch screen. In addition to a regular alarm clock, there is also an intelligent alarm clock, when the gadget independently selects the optimal moment to wake up within a specified time range.

Important! Huawei Watch GT can also determine the user’s location thanks to three navigation systems at once: GPS, GLONASS and Galileo.

In addition, the watch has a built-in compass. The set of functions is useful, say, for athletes: precise determination of the location and route taken will perfectly complement detailed training data.

Advantages and Disadvantages - Pros and Cons

The advantages of this smart watch include its elegant appearance, which looks appropriate in any situation. Other advantages:

  • presence of NFC module;
  • premium manufacturing materials;
  • high resolution screen;
  • good moisture and dust protection, scratch resistance;
  • sapphire protective glass;
  • Possibility to replace the original strap.

The disadvantages are the rather bulky and heavy case, as well as the high price. In retail and online stores, the cost of the device is 18-26 thousand rubles. Meanwhile, for example, Asus ZenWatch, which also belongs to the premium segment, costs almost 10 thousand rubles cheaper.

Screen

The smartwatch display has high brightness, contrast and sensitivity. The screen has a good oleophobic coating - drops of moisture are not retained. Regarding durability, it is better to handle the watch with care. Otherwise, unsightly scratches will appear.

The readability of information on the display is affected by adjusting the brightness. The user can configure the parameter automatically or manually.

There are many replaceable dials available to the user. In addition, you can customize a custom watch face from a photo from your smartphone.

Comparison with Apple Watch

According to a number of indicators, Huawei Watch 2 Classic outperforms even the Apple Watch. So, this watch has better dust and moisture protection, higher screen resolution, and proprietary shockproof glass. The display is always on, allowing you to view the time without unlocking the device.

Huawei has GPS - again, unlike Apple. Allows you to track your sleep and provides reports on depth and duration. Indicates low battery. Supports social networks. It has a barometer, a cellular module, a gyroscope, an activity detector, a vibration alert - the Apple watch does not have all these options.

But in terms of screen size, Huawei is inferior to its competitor. Apple uses Force Touch (3D Touch) technology. In addition, the Apple Watch tracks altitude, has a route tracker, and can be used to remotely control the camera. Huawei doesn't have these features.

conclusions

The Huawei Watch 2 Classic smartwatch has a stylish design, but at the same time with a fairly pronounced thickness of the case. Reliable water protection, but for swimming you need to take a watch with a higher class - 5 ATM. A touch screen for navigation is not the best solution for a device with a small display.

Pairing Huawei Watch with a smartphone

When purchasing any smartwatch, you need to consider the purpose of its purchase. This is an important point, because the market for wearable electronics is at the stage of formation and many choose devices for themselves in pursuit of fashion and affordable cost. Many people are faced with a situation where, soon after purchasing a watch, they find it unnecessary. As a result, the Internet is already filled with negative reviews and stories about the uselessness of smart watches. But this is a mistaken opinion. The review of the Huawei Watch did not open up any fundamentally new possibilities; everything here is typical for the Android Wear OS.

The main function remains the time display, with which there are no problems. There are already several hundred different dials available, of which about 40 are preset by the manufacturer. They display not only the time in analog or digital form, but also various data, such as the day of the week, missed notifications, current news and much more, depending on your preferences. There are incredibly many options, everyone will find something of their own.

The next function of the watch will be the ability to vibrate alerts about the receipt of text notifications and calls to the phone. This greatly simplifies life, because you don’t have to constantly take the device out of your pocket.

Thirdly, this is a good sports tracker that can count the number of steps taken, distance, approximate number of calories burned, and also measure pulse. Of course, all data is stored on the Huawei Watch and displayed in the form of convenient graphs.

The watch runs on Android Wear OS. Connection is possible to devices on Android and iOS. You can use factory applications and install your own, further increasing the functionality. With the help of your watch you will always be aware of the latest news, know the weather and be able to control many functions of your phone. In addition, there are simple games and useful programs.
