How to Set a Ringtone for a Contact Through Settings, Contacts, Applications, Player and PC - 5 Methods

Each device running a particular operating system offers a standard set of melodies and ringtones that can be used to set a call or alert. Often, users want to go beyond the options presented and, fortunately, the Android OS allows you to do this in many ways. This function is implemented especially simply in Samsung devices from the top segment.

Regardless of whether the user knows what specific melody he wants to hear or simply wants to expand the choice, this task can be accomplished in very simple ways, which will be discussed below.

What do you need to set a Ringtone for a Contact?

The instructions in this guide are known to work on Samsung, Xiaomi, Sony, Redmi, LG, Nokia and others running TouchWiz with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or higher. The options presented above work with most Android devices and shells.

You don't need root access on your phone either. This guide will also be useful for those who have a rooted phone. Only provided that your smartphone runs at least Android 4.1 with standard TouchWiz. The procedures may be slightly different, especially if your phone has a memory card installed or is using a different version of Android.

You should also note in advance that the MP3 files you want to use should already be on your phone. There are many ways to copy MP3 files to your phone, one of them will be described in detail in the chapter “Method 5. Via Computer via USB”. We will also consider those methods where the user does not know what melody he wants to set and expects to find a suitable option in a special application.

In other words, here you can find a “from and to” guide to choosing, downloading and installing a custom ringtone on your smartphone. So let's get started.

Where to get songs

Before you change the ringtone on Honor's phone, you need to prepare a track. To download it, you can use one of many methods:

  • Browser and special sites. Alternatively, log into your phone's browser and go to any of the music sites. For example, it could be muzter.net, zaycev.net. After logging in, find the song you want and download it to your mobile device. Next, all that remains is to put music on the ringtone of your Honor 7 or another model. By default, the file is saved in the Download folder, but if desired, it can be transferred to another section of the mobile device.

  • Computer/laptop. Another way is to download songs from a PC or laptop via Bluetooth or USB cable. In the first case, you need to turn on Bluetooth and send the file, and in the second, connect your smartphone to a computer or laptop using USB, and then transfer the melody to the internal memory / SD card of your smartphone. At the final stage, all that remains is to put the track on Honor on the contact using any of the above methods.
  • Phone applications. Alternatively, install one of the music programs on your smartphone with access to many songs. Popular software includes Zaycev net or RYT. You can use other applications as well. After downloading, all that remains is to set a melody for the call/contact of Honor 10 Lite or another device.

  • Cloud. Alternatively, upload the files to a cloud service. Example - One Drive or Drop Box. Then connect to your account from your phone and download files. At the last step, all that remains is to put the composition on a contact in Honor using any of the above schemes.
  • Social media. Music can also be taken from social networks. For example, to download from YouTube or Facebook, you can use the site savefrom.net. For downloading from VK - downloadmusicvk.ru, and for classmates - a special program “MP3 scanner for Odnoklassniki” from the Play Market.

You can take music from other places, for example, download it from another phone, transfer it via FTP, or use another method.

Knowing how to set a ringtone on Honor to a contact, you can personalize any person on the list and make him recognizable. To solve the problem, use the built-in capabilities or install an additional program to expand the functionality. In the comments, share your experience in solving a similar problem and leave brief instructions for other users.

Setting a Ringtone for a Contact Call Through the “Settings” Section – Method #1

To set an MP3 file as a custom ringtone for Android system, you need to follow these steps:

  • Copy MP3 files to your phone. The standard Samsung Music Player application should recognize and see the files. Check if the music tracks have appeared in the Music Player application;
  • Go to Settings > Sound > Device Ringtone. You will see a list of default phone ringtones;

  • Click the “Add” button to launch the media manager application. If you have multiple file and media management apps installed on your phone, select Music Player from the pop-up window;

  • You will see a list of music files stored on your phone. Select the one you need and click Finish.

The MP3 ringtone you selected will now be set as your ringtone. Repeat the same process to add other tracks to the list of default ringtones.

How to set a ringtone on a Samsung smartphone with TouchWiz shell

If you want to set a ringtone for all contacts at once, that is, change the standard ringtone, then you need to open the settings and find the “Sound” item. In the case of the TouchWiz shell, this item is located on the “My Device” tab.

Once you open the Sound settings section, you will see a list of all the settings that have to do with sound. Here you can raise or lower the volume and set a ringtone for calls, messages and operating system notifications. In order to set a ringtone, open the “Ringtones” section.

After this, a window will open in front of you in which you can select one of the standard melodies. If you want to set your own ringtone, then you need to click on the “Add” button and select a file with a ringtone. After this, the melody you selected will appear in the list of standard ones, and you can set it as a ringtone.

As you can see, in this case, the process of installing a melody is slightly different from pure Android, but the differences are not too big. As on pure Android, here you need to go to the settings, go to the “Sound” section and add the desired melody.

Every owner of a phone with an Android system wants to make it more advanced. Therefore, it is useful to know how to put a song on a call on Android. Not everyone likes the standard ringtones that the system offers. Many people want to hear a pleasant melody when calling. Everyone has a song that you listen to all the time, and you want everyone around you to hear it.

It will be nice to hear exactly that at the moment when someone calls. After all, there are so many new tracks now, and in this way everyone can show that they understand music and are supporters of one style or another. You can also select a ringtone for a specific person, alarm, or message. Android phones differ only in the OS version, despite this, the method of changing the ringtone is identical for everyone. Only the location of menu items and their names change.

How to Set a Ringtone for a Contact Call in the Contacts Application – Method #2

Sometimes it becomes necessary to distinguish a certain contact from the rest by means of a special call, so that it is immediately clear who the call is coming from. Setting a ringtone for a specific contact is possible through the “Contacts” settings menu:

  • Launch the Contacts application and open the contact information page;

  • Scroll down until you see the Ringtones section. Click on it and a dialog box will appear with three options:
  • Default – use the default melody;
  • Ringtones – select a melody for a specific contact;
  • Go to “My Files” to select a ringtone file;

  • Select “Go to my files” and find the MP3 file you want;

  • Select an MP3 file and tap Done.

Using the Contacts app

At one time, even Symbian-based smartphones allowed you to set a specific melody for each contact. You can do this on Android as well. To do this, you must follow these instructions:

1. Go to the Contacts

».

2. Select the contact you are interested in.

3. Here you need to click the “ Change”

" It may look like a pencil or hide under the ellipsis located in the upper right corner.

4. Now you definitely need to click on the three dots. In the pop-up menu, click on “ Set ringtone”

».

5. Select the application that will be used to view the list of songs stored on the device.

6. Select the folder with MP3 songs, and then the song itself.

7. Save the result by clicking on the checkmark.

Note:

On some smartphones, the ringtone setting process may differ. Everything, again, depends on the branded shell - each manufacturer is sophisticated in its own way. Our example is given for “pure” Android installed on devices of the Nexus family.

Using Third Party Applications for Contact Ringtone – Method #3

Another way to set a specific sound for a call is to use third-party applications. This can be done through the ringtone manager or editor application.

Ringtone Maker

One such application is Ringtone Maker . This program allows you to trim a music file and set it as a ringtone or notification:

  • Install the free ad-supported Ringtone Maker
  • Run the downloaded file;
  • All music files will be displayed in a list. You need to find the desired music file;
  • Click on the green button next to the name of the file you want to edit. The settings menu will appear;
  • Select Edit to edit the music file;
  • On the next screen, move the sliders to determine the area to crop;
  • You can also set fade-out effects or adjust the volume level. The app also allows you to paste the trimmed file into another MP3 track;
  • When you are satisfied with the changes, click the Save button.
  • Here you are asked to choose whether to save the file as a ringtone, notification, alarm, or simple track. Also give the new cut track a name;
  • Click Save.

Developers offer a great variety of such applications, and the logic of each software’s actions is similar to that described above. However, using such a program is not always necessary; in some modern models, the user can select the moment to start playback directly through the settings menu. This feature is available on all Samsung models running Android 8 and higher.

Zedge

There are many sites and other resources where you can find ringtones, but the easiest and most common is Zedge. Zedge is a personalization app that lets you personalize your phone the way you want, including ringtones and wallpaper. Zedge even simplifies the process by allowing you to download and set a ringtone as part of using the app.

An extremely interesting solution for those who do not know where and how to download audio tracks for installation on their smartphone or simply do not want to spend a lot of time on it.

The use of the application is optimized so that any user can work with it, regardless of the level of gadget proficiency. If questions may arise with the application described above, then with Zedge everything is as simple and accessible as possible. The search here is carried out by category, you just need to type the desired value, for example, “ringing sound of an old phone” and all the tracks that fit this description will be displayed here.

Next you need to perform a few basic steps:

  • In the middle of the screen, where the melody information is located, there is an “Install” button that you need to click.
  • Next, the “Set ringtone” button will appear;
  • Click “Allow” to allow Zedge to download the ringtone to your phone's memory;
  • After that, go to “Settings” to allow Zedge to change system settings, including the ringtone.

At the bottom of the screen you will see a pop-up notification that the ringtone has been applied. If you want to set a ringtone for a specific contact or as a notification tone for messages, you can select these options all from the same settings menu.

A nice bonus is that this application also provides wallpapers for smartphones, so it will be useful not only for those who want to set a custom ringtone, but also background images for their device.

Using more advanced techniques

First of all, you need to create a folder in the root of your memory card called media, in it the audio folder and then create folders like: alarms (alarm clock), notifications (notifications), ringtones (ringtones), ui (interface sounds).

It is necessary to note one small detail, many more modern devices already have a built-in memory card, the address of which is corresponding to the sdcard, and here you need to create all the folders. And an external memory card, an external memory card at that time will have the name sdcard-ext, the main thing here is not to confuse it.

Well, regarding the method, how can you set an excellent ringtone if, of course, you have super category rights, then you just need to copy the melodies that you need into folders by going to the address - system\media\audio.

So we have finished our little master class, which, I hope, helped to sort out all of the above issues in the most scrupulous way, and gave the opportunity to express your individuality to your Android to the maximum.

Set a Ringtone for a Contact Using Music Player – Method #4

Sometimes Android allows you to install your favorite MP3 ringtone by using the Music Player application. This is done in the following way:

  • Find and play your desired MP3 music file in Music Player app;
  • While playing a file, press the “Menu” button to open “Options” (usually located at the top of the screen);
  • Click on “Set as” and choose whether you want to set the track as a phone ringtone, ringtone for a specific caller, or alarm.

Some tracks can be used as an alert signal in the same way, but this function is not always available, because much depends on the file format, its weight, duration and capabilities of the smartphone OS itself.

Unlike ringtones, you can't always directly set an MP3 file as a notification through the Settings menu or the Music Player app. You must manually configure the music file to use it as a notification. Here's how to do it:

  • Copy the required MP3 files to your phone;
  • Launch a file manager application on your phone (for example, the My Files application, ES File Explorer, etc.);

  • Find the MP3 file you want and copy it to the notifications directory in your phone's internal storage (usually /storage/sdcard0). If you don't find the notification directory, create it manually before copying the MP3 file into it;

  • Return to the main screen and open the settings menu;
  • Go to Sound > Device Notifications and select the recently added MP3 file from the list.

This rule is especially relevant for outdated versions of the Android OS; now developers are trying to move away from such difficulties, and therefore do not separate sound files into those that can be used as notifications or calls.

The first way is simple

Setting a ringtone for a contact via phone settings:

1) Open contacts in your Android phone;

2) Select someone who needs separate music for a contact in Android;

3) Click on the thumbnail of the selected contact;

4) Click on the little man on the right side of the screen - we get to SETTINGS;

5) Click on the MENU button, if it is not there, click on the 3 dots in the upper right part of the screen.

6). Click “Set ringtone”.

7) In the menu that opens, select what to use:

  • standard ringtones;
  • file manager.

8) Installation:

  • To set a standard signal, check the box next to the selected signal and click “OK”.
  • To set your own melody, select it using the file manager.

Procedure for setting a melody

Depending on the operating system version, this procedure may look different.

Here are all the ways:

  • Go to the phone book and select the desired contact. On its page, click on the “Edit” inscription. Scroll to the very bottom of the page that opens. There you will see the “Ringtone” item. Click on it. Select an audio file from the list of available ones, or click on the “From device memory” button and select a song from the list of audio devices. This method will definitely be relevant on Android 6 and Android 7 OS.
  • This procedure can be much shorter in Android 5 and earlier versions. On the contact page, you need to click the menu and select the “Set ringtone” function. It may also be called “Set ringtone.” After this, a list of available songs will open and, possibly, the same button associated with selecting from the device’s memory. You can choose the one you need.
  • It is also possible that in the contact menu you will need to select “Options” or “Melody”. After this, a list of available songs will open.

It is worth saying that everything is not always as simple as it seems. Therefore, it makes sense to consider some common problems associated with this procedure.

Setting a custom melody

Installing a custom ringtone will take a little longer. First you need to download the necessary ringtones, you can do this directly from your phone, just search for “download ringtone”. Once you have downloaded all the necessary ringtones, you can proceed to adding them to the list of ringtones.

We will need a file manager, you can use a standard file manager. I recommend using ES Explorer; users love it for its convenience and simplicity. You can download it from the link below:

After installing the ES Explorer application, launch it. Press the “Menu” button and select “Downloads”. A download folder will open containing the downloaded ringtones.

Now we need to copy the melodies; to do this, click on the name of one of the melodies and hold your finger on the screen until the selection mode turns on (squares should appear at the bottom of the icons). Now select all the melodies by clicking on their icons. Next, click the “copy” button:

Open the menu again and select “Device”, go to the “sdcard” folder, then go to the “Ringtones” folder and press the “Insert” button.

Did you know that on your Android smartphone you can set your own ringtone for each contact? This will allow you to determine who is calling without even looking at the screen. Find out how to do this in our article.

What to do if you can’t set the melody

The most common problem is the inability to select an alternative ringtone. That is, it is simply not in the list, just like the “From device memory” button.

In this case, you need to do this:

  • Go through the file manager to the device memory. Select the “dcim” folder.
  • Then follow the path /media/audio/ringtones/.
  • Copy the ringtone you want to set to the contact's call into this folder. After that, carry out your previous actions - the ringtone will appear in the list of available ones.

If there is no such folder, create it.

Also, if some menu items are missing, you can use the program Rings Extended. It significantly expands the standard functionality and is extremely easy to use.

Write in the comments what other problems you have.
