A familiar situation: you are reading some information from the screen of your smartphone, and at that moment the display fades out. What if it takes not a few seconds to read, but much more? It is clear that constantly pressing the power button is annoying, to put it mildly.
How to prevent the Android screen from going dark? It turns out that the situation is not as critical as it might seem. There are several ways to solve this, which we will talk about now.
Why does my phone screen turn off?
If you want to know how to make your Android phone or tablet's screen stay on longer, you're not alone. Luckily, this is very easy to do and only takes a few clicks.
The mode when the phone screen turns off is called “sleep”. It usually turns on 30 seconds after the last action. For many users this is enough, but, for example, if you read a lot on your phone, the time may not be enough. Or, for example, you are preparing food according to a recipe found on your tablet - you won’t constantly press the screen with your flour-covered hands so that it doesn’t turn off?
Why does the mobile phone screen go blank?
One of the default features of smartphones is “sleep mode,” which is activated if the device is not used by the user for a while, usually 30 seconds. Ordinary push-button mobile phones were endowed with the same property long before the advent of smart phones, so automatically turning off the display is not news to anyone. The option allows you to significantly save the device’s battery power, since the active screen consumes a lot of energy. In addition, modern smartphones have the option of locking the display and touch buttons when making calls, which prevents accidental clicks during calls and also prevents third parties from gaining access to the device.
Although turning off the screen automatically is useful, in some situations where the user is not physically interacting with the phone, this feature becomes a problem, preventing certain tasks from being completed. In this case, you can increase the time the display is active or make sure that it does not go out at all. Let's look at how to do this below.
How to prevent the screen from turning off when charging
Is hibernation not enough for your purposes? On Android, you can turn off the mode in which the screen will not turn off while charging. In this mode, you can use your phone as a night light.
To activate this mode, you need to go to Settings > For developers (if there is no such item, look for “How to enter developer mode on Android”) and check the “Keep the screen on” checkbox.
Now, when connected to a charger, the Android device's screen will be always on (but can also be turned off by pressing the power button).
How to set up sleep mode using standard tools
To adjust the shutdown of your phone’s screen using pre-installed tools, you need to go to “ Settings ”, open the “ Screen ” section, select “ Sleep mode ” and set there the time the smartphone is “awake” that is comfortable for you, after which the screen will go dark, or even disable sleep mode by checking the corresponding line:
How to prevent Xiaomi phone screen from turning off
On phones running the MiUI system, there is no sleep mode setting in the “Screen” section. But on Xiaomi phones you can also make sure that the screen does not turn off.
To do this, go to settings, in the System and device , select Lock and protection:
Under Lock screen, select Sleep mode :
In the dialog box that opens, select the time after which the phone screen should go dark:
Will this service respond to the faces of people who are not included in the phone’s face control database?
This function is based on a facial recognition service, but, nevertheless, there is no need to save the faces of the people to whom we lend our mobile phone in the smartphone’s memory. Therefore, this mode will work only as long as the Artificial Intelligence of the smartphone recognizes the face of any person whose eyes are looking at the smartphone screen.
Instructions for enabling the “Keep on while watching” service on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone.
1. From the Applications screen, launch Phone Settings by clicking on the “ Settings ” icon.
Screen #1 – click on the “Settings” icon.
2. On the main page of your phone Settings, you need to open the “ Additional features ” section.
Screen No. 2 – click on the name of the “Additional functions” section.
3. In the “Additional functions” section, you need to open the “ Movements and gestures ” subsection.
Screen No. 3 – click on the line “Movements and gestures”.
4. Well, now, being in the “Movements and Gestures” subsection, you need to turn on the switch for the “ Do not turn off while viewing ” item.
This is how we enabled the “Don’t turn off while watching” service, which was previously called “Smart Shutdown”.
Screen No. 4 – click on the switch for the “Do not turn off while viewing” item. Screen No. 5 – view of the “Movements and Gestures” subsection with the “Do not turn off while viewing” service enabled.
Now, while viewing information on the screen, the display will not turn off even after the timeout expires.
How to keep the screen from turning off on any Android phone
If your phone does not have screen sleep settings or the time offered by the manufacturer is not enough, you can install the No screen off application. This application is available on Play Market. It does not support the Russian language and has not been updated for a long time, but it continues to work properly (and does not contain advertising!)
The application works very simply - when launched, it disables the sleep timer (that is, the phone screen will remain on until the battery runs out or until you turn it off). When you click on the application icon again (or when you click on the sun icon in the curtain), the sleep timer is turned on (the value you set in the settings is returned). Here's a demo of the application in action:
How to disable screen timeout using third-party software
I think it’s not worth going into too much detail about why the “Sleep mode” function is needed, or turning off the screen after a certain period of time (timeout from English - timeout). It is clear that if the smartphone is constantly in active mode, then the battery charge will begin to tend to zero too quickly.
In this case, the problem can be easily solved using special utilities.
Hold Screen On Demo
This program will not let the screen go dark while you are looking at it. Using the front camera, Hold Screen ON captures your gaze and prevents your smartphone from falling asleep. When you stop looking at the screen, it fades and, accordingly, resource consumption stops.
It is possible to bind the operation of the utility to a specific application, and then the phone screen will not go dark, identifying your eyes in this application, however, if your camera works in another application, the program will have to wait until it is free.
Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S3 use this function without installing the utility, since this model has it by default, and if you have a simpler device, then you just need to download Hold Screen ON:
KeepScreen (now free)
Another good application that does a great job of disabling timeout. Unlike the previous one, Keep Screen
controls the position of the device using the built-in gyroscope. Therefore, when you hold your gadget in your hands, the utility, taking into account its angle of inclination relative to the horizontal axis, will prevent the screen from going dark.
In addition, there is also the ability to block the screen from turning off on your Android device for selected applications. To do this, after specifying the desired program, click " Start/stop service"
“, and on the phone, in the screen darkening sensor (see the first screenshot), set the interval to 30 seconds.
Keep Screen takes care of your smartphone’s resources and works in the background; to do this, click “ On”
", and after that "
Save and restart app
".
Important! If you turn off (lock) the device using the power button while the program is running, then after thirty seconds the screen will turn on and will not go off. Therefore, before locking the gadget with the power button, you need to close the application or simply return to the main desktop.
We have nothing more to add on today’s topic, and, of course, you can judge how useful the information presented was. Good luck!
The screen goes dark quickly. How to fix
- Go to Settings and open Display & Brightness;
- Find the “Sleep Mode” menu and expand it to full screen;
If the screen goes out prematurely, the period of its activity can be extended
- Select the desired delay for turning off the screen: 30 seconds, a minute, 2 minutes, etc.;
- Confirm the changes if required and exit to the desktop.
Wrong date and time in WhatsApp. What to do
This is the easiest way. However, it also happens that the “Sleep Mode” tab may be inactive and grayed out. In this case, no matter how much you press it, it will not open. Most likely, the whole point is that you have the power saving mode turned on, which does not allow you to change the time after which the screen should turn off. Therefore, the first thing we will have to do is disable the power saving mode:
- Go to “Settings” and open the “Battery” section;
- In the window that opens, disable the power saving mode;
If the button for changing the activity period is not illuminated, you need to disable the power saving mode
- Then go back to the menu and open "Display and Brightness";
- If the Sleep tab becomes active, select the option you want.
How harmful can it be?
There are many myths and legends surrounding disabling sleep mode. Some say that if you stop using it, the smartphone will quickly fail. Our specialist answers the question of whether this is really so.

Ask a Question
Question to the expert
How will disabling sleep mode affect my smartphone?
First of all, the autonomy of the device will suffer. The phone will drain faster because its screen will always be active.
Is disabling sleep mode dangerous?
Deactivating the option will only be dangerous when the device is charging. During the process of energy recovery, it already heats up, and with an active screen, the temperature of the case and internal elements will increase even more. This can lead to battery burnout or failure of the processor or RAM unit.
How to safely use your smartphone without sleep mode?
Just press the power button to lock your device. If you stop watching a video or playing a game, lock the screen to avoid serious heat build-up.
