Unpacking and packaging

The gadget comes in a compact white box with the model and company logo.

The phone itself is completely wrapped in factory protective film.

There is also a charging cord in the box. It is quite strong and high quality.

The next item of equipment is headphones. Since this is a budget model, you shouldn’t expect super high-quality sound or expensive headset material.

These are the simplest headphones with below average sound. Suitable for conversations over a cellular network or for video calls.

The last part of the package is the charging connector.

Please note that it does not come with an adapter for European sockets. You will have to purchase this part yourself.

Design and build

The smartphone is available in three color variations:

  • Black;
  • Blue;
  • Gold.

Quite a successful arrangement of colors, because these three shades are the most popular among Huawei technology users.

Let's look at the case assembly and design using the blue model as an example. In this shade the phone looks fresh and unusual. The color is rich and deep.

Please note that the entire phone is made of plastic. There are no aluminum inserts.

This is acceptable for such an inexpensive model. In addition, the plastic itself is pleasant to the touch and quite dense.

If you want to purchase a gadget in a dark color, be prepared for it to get dirty.

All dirt and dust particles are visible on such a case. This flaw can be hidden using any cover.

On the front panel of the smartphone we see a large screen with small frames. At the top are the front camera, proximity sensor, flash and earpiece. Below is the brand logo.

At the ends we see all the necessary control keys, a charging port, and a speaker.

There are no touch keys on the case. You need to control your phone using the buttons that appear at the bottom of the OS screen.

In general, the assembly of the gadget corresponds to a budget smartphone. It's not perfect, but it's passable.

When pressing, you can hear small squeaks and crackles, so to protect your smartphone it is better to additionally purchase a bumper case or a book-shaped case.

This minimizes the chance of cracks in the case or screen after a fall.

Note! Globally, the Huawei Y5 2018 smartphone is sold in two assemblies. DRA-L21 – for two SIM cards and DRA-L01 – for one. In CIS stores there is mainly the first option, but it is better to carefully check the assembly type before buying a phone.

As you can see, due to the low cost of the gadget, it does not have a fingerprint scanner or a metal casing. Also, the display does not have an oleophobic coating.

Platforms

Huawei Y5 2021 and Y6 Prime 2021 are built on entry-mid-level platforms from MediaTek and Qualcomm, respectively. It is also worth noting that the Y6 2021 is also sold in Ukraine. With all the prefixes in the names, it is easy to get confused in the variety of models, but it is worth remembering that the regular Y6 2021 does not have a fingerprint scanner and is equipped with smaller amounts of memory - 2/16 GB.

Despite the differences in memory capacity, the devices are equipped with platforms with comparable characteristics, which demonstrate almost identical results in benchmarks.

But in practice everything is not so obvious. The speed of the Y6 Prime 2018 differs minimally from the Y7 Prime, which we reviewed earlier. The smartphone is not reactive, but in general it will suit an undemanding user who uses a small set of “light” applications. However, if we are talking about games, then all is not lost here either - at minimum graphics settings it normally runs Asphalt Extreme, but on PUBG the hardware capabilities are no longer enough.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the Y5 2021 - it often pauses when performing many common operations, such as launching and minimizing applications or entering the menu. It is obvious that at the start of sales the software is not yet fully adapted to the relatively new MediaTek platform; the company promises to correct this.

Otherwise, we have “twins” equipped with MicroUSB and mini-jack connectors, FM radio, Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) and Bluetooth 4.2 modules, GPS, as well as a standard set of proximity, lighting, and rotation sensors.

Screen

The screen with a diagonal of 5.45 inches and an IPS matrix does not claim to be the best display of the year, but for a budget employee it is excellent. The picture is displayed in HD resolution (1440×720 pixels).

You won't see individual pixels on the display unless you look at very bright images for a long time. All shades are very rich.

You can use your smartphone outdoors without any problems. But under the scorching sun it will not be possible to see what is happening on the screen.

Despite the low resolution and low cost of all materials, the viewing angles are good.

The smartphone has a function to automatically adjust the screen lighting depending on the environment in which the gadget is located (building, street, darkness, and so on).

Although the sensor does not work instantly, after 1-2 minutes the screen manages to adapt to the environment.

Users can independently adjust color settings.

You can change the color temperature, brightness, contrast and saturation.

There is a “Night mode” option in the OS add-ons, which can be activated if you often use the phone in the dark and when the building is dark.

The screen will take on a yellowish tint, which will reduce eye strain and make text easier to read.

Compared to the 2017 version of Huawei Y5, the new build features an improved color scheme. The shades seem more natural and pleasing to the eye.

Performance

Smartphone performance is one of the disadvantages. Huawei Y5 is running MediaTek MT6739.

As you know, this processor is characterized by low cost and low performance. Quad-core CPU (frequency 1.5 GHz).

The graphics are powered by the PowerVR GE8100 engine.

Tests show poor phone performance. On average, RAM can only support 2-3 running applications at the same time.

For 2 GB of space this is the expected result. If you don't overload your phone with too much software, it won't slow down or freeze.

The concept of a smartphone is budget-friendly, so it makes no sense to demand high performance from the device.

In AnTuTu, the smartphone scores a little more than 36,000 points, which puts it on par with inexpensive smartphones from Samsung, Elephone, Gionee and Blackview.

You shouldn't expect high-quality game playback on the Huawei Y5. For example, Asphalt Extreme displays with frequent stuttering and blurry graphics.

Other games with more complex graphics, even if they start, will often crash.

Huawei Y5 will appeal to users for whom the latest games and heavy applications are not a priority. The gadget is quite enough to perform standard tasks.

It works great when surfing the Internet, making calls, listening to music, watching movies in HD quality.

Huawei Y5 Prime (2018) - cheap and cheerful - review, specifications

What can you ask for from a smartphone that costs just over $100? Probably a little, right? Huawei is one of the most important companies on the market, actively pushing aside Samsung and Apple, so its devices can already be classified as the highest category. That’s why a cheap device from Huawei will always be inferior to a similarly priced smartphone from Xiaomi or Meizu, because you have to pay a little more for an A-brand. Huawei Y5 Prime, surprisingly, is not very expensive, given its characteristics, so you can safely take a closer look at the smartphone.

Huawei U5 Prime 2021 offers a simple plastic body, complemented by a metal rigid frame, as well as tempered glass that protects the display matrix. Frames - in a smartphone, the frames around the screen are not record small, but they are quite neat - clearly no larger than those offered by Redmi 6A and others. Regarding the glass, it is worth noting that it does not have 2.5D rounded edges - less aesthetically pleasing, but much more practical (you can take full-size glass without frames and forget about air gaps). As for the case itself, Huawei rather has the following tactics - plastic is a practical material and in some cases better than metal, so the choice fell on it. It is also cheaper, which is very important when pricing a cheap smartphone. Nevertheless, Huawei Y5 Prime 2021 looks good, or rather ordinary. An extraordinary but nice device for undemanding users.

The screen diagonal of the new product is 5.45 inches - the new favorite size among smartphone makers. The resolution is also known to everyone - it is HD+ 1440x720 pixels. The screen itself is not bad with adequate color reproduction, but not the best brightness - about 350 nits. At the same time, the minimum brightness is excellent - only 2 nits - for reading at night this is an excellent indicator. The display has an aspect ratio of 18:9, so this is a full-screen device.

The resolution of the smartphone cameras is 13 MP for the rear and 5 MP for the front. For ordinary photos in normal shooting conditions, this is quite enough, so photos during the day will turn out very good.

Another thing is the speaker and microphone - there is only one of each, which is not entirely good. One microphone does not cope well with noise, so in loud places the interlocutor will hear the entire palette of sounds and not necessarily the voice of the speaker. One speaker is even worse, since the role of a multimedia speaker is performed by a conversational speaker. As a result, the sound is of low quality, quite quiet and flat. Alas, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to listen to music or watch a movie on your smartphone without headphones.

Processor in an entry-level smartphone. The device is powered by a quad-core Mediatek MT6739 with a core clock speed of up to 1.5 GHz. Fortunately, at least in the latest processors Mediatek began to abandon Mali in favor of PowerVR - a small, but performance increase in games is still observed. Although the smartphone is not a gaming smartphone, it should handle the new Asphalt 9 toy with cool graphics more or less normally. Fortunately, for this it has the necessary 2 GB of RAM and up to 16 GB of permanent memory.

A small disadvantage of the device is also its not the most capacious 3020 mAh battery. This is enough for one day of active use. Xiaomi Redmi 6A also has 3000 mAh, but at least the chipset process technology is 2.5 times smaller, which has a positive effect on battery life.

Memory

Although the gadget is available in two assemblies, they differ from each other only in the number of SIM card slots.

The memory capacity in all variations of Huawei Y5 2018 is the same.

The smartphone has 16 GB of internal memory and 2 GB of RAM. Not the most impressive figures, but 16 GB is enough to install 15-20 programs.

Keep in mind that the system takes up a large share of space. In fact, you get several gigabytes less.

The RAM in the smartphone is enough for daily work with the browser, multimedia (music, video, streaming) and application applications (office software, notes, schedulers, and others).

You can expand the amount of permanent memory using memory cards up to 256 GB.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Y5 2021 phone

The dimensions of Huawei Y5 2021 are 70.9 mm wide, 146.5 mm long and 8.3 mm thick. With such dimensions it is convenient to operate the device with one hand. In addition, the weight of the device is about 145 g. Even if you operate the device with one hand, its weight is almost not felt.

If we evaluate the overall ease of use of the phone taking into account the size and weight, then there will be no problems with everyday use.

The smartphone is equipped with a 4-core MediaTek MT6739 processor, which is made at 28 nm. technical process.

The smartphone has 2 GB. RAM, which is quite enough. In very rare cases it will not be enough, but with this amount of RAM, you will rarely have problems.

The device's data storage capacity is 16 GB, and while this is enough for photos, it may not be enough for video shooting and a large number of games.

The phone is compatible with SD cards, so you can easily expand its memory. So you probably don't need to worry about storage capacity.

The Y5 2021 has a display diagonal of 5.45 inches. It's quite big. Photos, videos and games will look great on this screen. It is also suitable for productive use, such as creating a business document.

The smartphone has a high-end display and any graphic content you display on it, including videos and games, will be displayed clearly.

The main camera of the phone has 7.99 megapixels, which should be enough in most cases. However, you may be slightly unsatisfied with the quality of the photos.

Also, the smartphone has a 5.04 megapixel front camera, which is average for smartphone cameras. This is good enough for taking selfies, but you may not be satisfied with group photos or their print quality.

The battery capacity of Huawei Y5 2021 is 3020 mAh, which is a relatively large indicator. Compared to other smartphones, the battery life of Huawei Y5 2021 is good. With this capacity, you won't experience any problems even if you spend time on the Internet or Twitter for a long period of time. Even while playing games or watching videos, you can do so comfortably without worrying about battery life. However, some caution should be exercised when watching movies or playing games for too long.

Battery

Battery capacity – 3020 mAh. For a smartphone with a relatively small screen diagonal and average technical characteristics, such a battery is enough for a full day of operation without recharging.

If you regularly use the Internet via 4G or Wi-Fi, charging will last for a maximum of 5-6 hours in the mode of constantly loading web pages.

For users who occasionally make calls throughout the day, work with applications and do not surf the Internet too often, the battery will last even 30-35 hours.

Camera

For a budget smartphone, a budget camera. The 8 MP main and 5 MP front camera will allow you to take quite good pictures and selfies.

The front camera performs well in video calls.

During the day, the photos turn out good - all colors are recognized by the lens. But in poor lighting, noise immediately appears in the images.

In the camera hardware specifications, the manufacturer indicates support for HDR mode. If in fact it exists, it does not work in the best way.

Even with a slight breeze, objects in photographs appear blurry.

Videos from the main camera are immediately shot in Full HD, but the final quality is also average.

A smartphone is not suitable for constant video shooting, but for infrequently capturing important moments, the Huawei Y5 2021 is a good budget solution.

Examples of pictures taken with the main camera:

Cameras Huawei Y5 2021 and Y6 Prime 2021

Huawei Y5 2021 received a main camera with an 8 MP sensor (f/2.2) with autofocus and flash and a front camera with a resolution of 5 MP (f/2.0), also with a flash.

Huawei Y6 Prime 2021 already offers a 13 MP main camera sensor (f/2.2) and an 8 MP front module (f/2.0, flash).

The camera application for smartphones is comparable - a minimum of shooting modes (there is “Decoration”, HDR, panorama), only basic settings and color filters. At the same time, even from the characteristics it is clear that models should shoot differently.

The Y5 2021 camera leaves impressions similar to the performance of a smartphone - photos are obtained with poor detail, it is better not to take pictures in medium and low light conditions, although daytime shots look fine. The video is bad.

Huawei Y6 Prime 2021 is doing better; the shooting quality, if inferior to the older Y7 Prime, is only insignificant. In general, this device has cameras that are typical for its price segment and take acceptable photographs.

ITC.UA rating

Pros: nice design, separate slot for two NanoSIMs and a memory card, fast fingerprint scanner and face unlock (Y6 Prime), normal screen and performance

Cons: Performance and cameras (Y5 Prime)

Conclusion: Getting to know the inexpensive Huawei Y5 2021 and Y6 Prime 2021 brought both pleasant and not so pleasant impressions. The younger model in the line (Y5) disappointed us in many ways with its speed and cameras. Perhaps it can be partially justified by the relatively low price of 3,400 hryvnia, but we don’t want to look for such “excuses.” At the same time, the experience of using the Y6 Prime (2018) was comparable to the more expensive Y7 Prime. We won’t call it “the best smartphone for 5,000 hryvnia,” but overall we have a normal, inexpensive device. In this segment, manufacturers are following two paths - some are trying to provide more interesting hardware, while others are trying to provide functionality comparable to flagships through software. Huawei is currently choosing the second path - the inexpensive smartphone is equipped with the same face unlock function, the design is vaguely reminiscent of the company's advanced models, which is generally not bad. It remains to answer the question posed at the beginning - which of the Y-series smartphones of 2021 can be called optimal? Definitely not the Y5 2018. The other models will offer a comparable user experience - the Y6 will have the Face Unlock function, but modest amounts of memory and no scanner, which you can’t blame the Y6 Prime for; and the Y7 Prime will offer a slightly more powerful platform, a larger screen and even a second main camera, which will allow you to experiment with background blur. Having assessed their own needs and desires, everyone can independently choose a more suitable device.

Sound

If we talk about the quality of the reproduced sound, it leaves much to be desired. The music sounds a bit muffled.

If you are a music lover, we recommend purchasing good headphones and listening to your favorite tracks only with their help.

This way you can achieve the best quality. The sound is normal for phone calls. The interlocutor's voice can be heard clearly, without wheezing.

There is no equalizer in the smartphone settings, so you won’t be able to customize the sound of the gadget to your liking.

All communication modules work quickly and without problems. The only drawback is that when you turn on GPS, the current location is determined in 5-10 minutes, which is quite long.

Also, due to GPS, the system may freeze.

Interface

The Y5 Prime 2021 comes pre-installed with EMUI 8.0, which runs on Android 8.1.

The new version of the OS works quickly, without significant drawbacks. Many users complain about problems with updating the firmware, but the developers promise to eliminate all bugs by the end of August 2018.

Let us remind you that earlier information appeared on the network that several thousand phones do not download the firmware using the “System Update” settings window.

As for the OS functionality, it was cut down in the Prime Y5 model.

Compared to the Prime Y7, the 5 doesn't have one-handed control options, and the available gestures are limited.

The restrictions do not apply to key OS functions. This is how the developers managed to achieve normal operation of the smartphone on the new version of Android.

Users can customize the system to their taste.

The following options are available:

  • Selection of design themes;
  • Setting up the desktop layout;
  • Convenient navigation panel and the ability to customize it.

Note! In the next firmware version, the developers promise to add a software implementation of the user's face recognition algorithm. For convenient and quick unlocking, you do not need a special built-in scanner. Using the front camera and software based on neural networks, your identity will be identified by your smartphone. Quite a useful solution, because Huawei Y5 Prime does not have a fingerprint scanner or other biometrics.

The scanner can be used to unlock the screen and individual applications and folders.

Software

The smartphones run Android Oreo. In Huawei Y5 2018, this is Android 8.1 paired with EMUI 8.1 (security update from June 2018), Y6 Prime 2021 - Android 8.0 and EMUI 8.0, respectively (security update from May 2018).

Huawei's proprietary shell is well known to us from other company devices. First of all, it is distinguished by wide customization capabilities - you can customize the appearance of the interface, install themes that change the icons and appearance of standard applications.

Phone Manager allows you to configure application access rights to the Internet, background operation of individual applications, manage black and white call/SMS lists, and clear memory.

The standard applications of a file manager, gallery, calendar and others are also good - most likely, they will suit the potential user and he will not want to replace them with analogues from third-party developers.

The above features can be called standard for all Huawei smartphones, but the Y6 Prime 2021 has a couple of features that the most affordable model cannot boast of.

First of all, this is a fingerprint scanner. It allows you to quickly unlock your smartphone, as well as open the notification panel, scroll through photos in a standard gallery, turn off alarms and answer calls - these functions are quite convenient in practice.

Y6 Prime 2021 is also equipped with a face unlock function - recognition occurs using the front camera. If there is normal lighting, the function works quite quickly, and if it is dark around, you can use the scanner. Y5 2021 should get Face Unlock feature along with one of the upcoming updates.

Setting up the system navigation on the Y6 is also more flexible - in addition to the location of the virtual keys, the navigation bar can be hidden in any application or even replaced with a multifunction key with gesture support, which can be located anywhere on the screen.

Advantages and disadvantages

Huawei Y5 is initially an inexpensive phone, so you should understand that it has quite a few disadvantages. All of them are covered by price.

Positives

  • Screen . Today it is quite difficult to find a decent screen with an aspect ratio of 18:9 among smartphone lines up to 8,000 - 9,000 rubles. In Y5 Prime, the display has good color and looks presentable;
  • Color spectrum. The colors of the case are beautiful and will appeal to different categories of users;
  • Availability. Many were surprised by the price of the Y5, because even for such a device with modest characteristics it is small;
  • Thoughtful ergonomics. All the details of the case look great, the smartphone looks stylish and fits comfortably in the hand.

Negative:

  • Performance. The smartphone is not designed to run “heavy” software, so it is not suitable for fans of games or video editing;
  • Cameras. The quality of shooting deteriorates even with the slightest lack of light;
  • Sound. The music is played quietly.

Huawei Y5 Prime (2018) comparison with Redmi 6A

It’s worth comparing the device with its competitor Redmi 6A only because it will soon become quite popular, because the device is cheap and offers good characteristics. Naturally, Redmi 6A is far from an ideal option, but still the smartphone looks even better compared to the device from Huawei. However, see for yourself - all the characteristics are below.

Redmi 6A specifications

  • Colors: pink, gray, blue, gold;
  • Housing: tempered glass, plastic;
  • Display: 5.45-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1440x720 pixels, 18:9 format, brightness 400 nits, contrast ratio 1000:1, pixel density 295 ppi, occupies 73% of the front panel;
  • Processor: Mediatek Helio A22, 4-core, Cortex-A53 cores with a frequency of up to 2 GHz, 64-bit, 12 nanometer process technology;
  • Graphics: PowerVR Ge8300 with a frequency of 550 MHz;
  • RAM: 2/3/4 GB LPDDR3, 1x933 MHz;
  • Storage: 16/32/64 GB eMMC 5.1 + memory cards;
  • Main camera: 13 MP sensor, f/2.2 aperture, phase detection autofocus, electronic stabilization, backlight, video recording in 1080p @30 fps;
  • Selfie camera: 5 MP, f/2.2 aperture, face recognition;
  • Fingerprint scanner: absent;
  • Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.2, micro USB 2.0, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou;
  • SIM: micro-SIM, work in Dual SIM dual stand by mode;
  • Modem supporting LTE Cat 4, transmission speed up to 150 Mbit/s;
  • Battery: 3000 mAh;
  • OS version: Android 8.1 Oreo and proprietary MIUI 9 shell;
  • Antutu: 55000 points;
  • Dimensions: 71.5 x 147.5 x 8.3 mm;
  • Weight: 145 grams;
  • Prices: from 7200 rubles.

Redmi 6A advantages:

  • More powerful processor and more memory. In addition to the fact that the Mediatek Helio A22 is about 50% more productive in terms of the sum of parameters compared to the Mediatek MT6739, the Redmi 6A can also be purchased with more memory: 3/4 GB of RAM and 32/64 GB of ROM;
  • Camera capabilities. The sensor resolution in both smartphones is 13 MP, but in terms of photo quality, the Redmi 6A will be better, since Xiaomi has done a great job on the software. Moreover, the Redmi 6A has electronic video stabilization;
  • Battery life. Redmi 6A has a similar battery capacity, but due to a more than 2 times smaller technological process (12 nm versus 28 nm), the Helio A22 processor consumes less energy. With a smaller battery capacity, Redmi 6A can last about 25% longer.

Redmi 6A disadvantages:

  • Completely made of plastic. The smartphone does not have a visible metal plate, which Huawei has.

Now Redmi 6A is sold at an inflated price, so very soon the cost of the device will become another advantage, dropping to about 6,500 rubles. However, it is already clear that the device from Xiaomi looks more advantageous, especially due to the fresh hardware. However, if you don't like Xiaomi or MIUI, then the Huawei Y5 Prime (2018) will be a good candidate for purchase.

User reviews

Julia . I bought this phone in July. Since the gadget is not a gaming one, I didn’t expect much performance from it. It copes with its basic tasks perfectly. Browsers do not slow down, videos on YouTube are played without problems. The charge lasts for a day, but I don’t use my smartphone all the time. It is unclear why headphones were included in the package at all. They are no good, it would be better not to release such a bad headset at all.

Anton . I was looking for an additional phone up to 10,000 rubles and decided on the new Y5 Prime model. So far the device performs well when making calls and using social networks. The downside is that it’s difficult to find a suitable case. They simply are not available in stores, so you will have to order from China.

Ivan. For me this is a great smartphone. It is clear that the Y5 is not a flagship, but for a device costing 7,000 - 8,000 rubles it is an ideal option. For that kind of money you can’t buy a smartphone with a large bright screen and a stylish body.

Kirill. I have been using the device for more than a month. During this time, I have already installed system updates over the air three times, which means that the developers have not abandoned their line of budget devices and are constantly improving bugs.

conclusions

  • Camera: 6/10
  • Price: 9/10
  • Performance: 4/10
  • Design: 8/10
  • Screen: 8/10
  • Battery: 7/10
  • Result: 7

Huawei Y5 Prime 2018 is a super-budget and rather controversial smartphone. For that kind of money you shouldn't expect a miracle from the device.

If you need a simple and inexpensive device with a stylish appearance, choose this model.

It is also suitable for those users who use the phone only for calls, browsing and social networks.

Huawei Y5 Prime (2018) price, buy

The smartphone is already on sale, so it will be easy to find. Another thing is the price - in most stores they ask for 8,000 rubles, but in normal communication stores Huawei Y5 Prime (2018) can be found for 7,000 rubles or 7,500 rubles. Considering the characteristics of the device, 7,000 rubles is a reasonable price for it.
