Huawei begins a full-scale update of smartphones to EMIU 9.1 based on Android Pie - when OTA arrives, list of smartphones

Huawei begins a large-scale update of smartphones to EMUI 9.1

The initial list of updated smartphones, posted on the Chinese social network Weibo (from XDA developers), has now been officially confirmed by the Huawei brand. It includes about 49 phones that will necessarily receive the EMUI 9.1 update based on Android Pie. At the moment, only Huawei Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20X and Mate 20 RS receive the beta version of EMUI 9.1, while Huawei P30 Pro and P30 offer this system as pre-installed out of the box.

Until today, information about updating smartphones was unconfirmed, but thanks to Reddit, the data has become official - now we can safely say which devices will receive updates and when. The first to boast of the new system will be the Huawei Mate 20 line, which receives an update in June. In July, the old Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, along with the Mate 10 and Mate 9 series, as well as budget new products for 2021, will receive a system update and versions of Android. The last devices to receive EMUI 9.1 will be the Huawei P10 series - OTA will reach them in August.

We are already aware of how several devices are receiving the update, so we can safely say that there is some discrepancy in the schedule - the company is lagging behind and sending out the update later than promised. If you have a Huawei P20 Lite or any device from the Mate 20 line, you may have already received the 3.34 GB OTA.

The Android 9.0 Pie update has finally arrived. This article will teach you how to update your device to Android Pie and also find information about when your phone can receive the update.

More recently, the official release of Android 9.0 took place, called “Pie” (literally “pie”). Android 9.0 is available as an over-the-air download for the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, Pixel XL, and Essential PH-1, the first non-Pixel device to receive the update. To date, this operating system cannot yet be installed on any other smartphones.

However, very soon Android Pie will become available for those devices that participated in beta testing, namely Nokia 7 Plus, OnePlus 6, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Sony Xperia XZ2, Oppo R15 Pro and Vivo X21. In addition, the released update will also be available for compatible phones released under the Android One program. According to information provided by Google, this should happen before the end of this fall.

What if my phone is not on the list

Smartphones that were not released under the Android One program and did not participate in the Android Pie beta testing will not receive the Android 9.0 update right now. However, they are planned to be updated before the end of autumn this year.

It is worth considering that some older devices will not be able to be updated to the recently released version of Android at all. But if your smartphone is one of the 2021 flagships, then most likely in the next six months you will be able to enjoy Android Pie on your device.

Below is information about which phones will and will not be updated to Android Pie, as well as when to expect the update.

When will my phone receive the Android Pie update?

Asus

Asus ZenFone 5 will be able to be updated to Android Pie in the last three months of 2021. And ZenFone 5 Lite, ZenFone Max, Max Pro, ZenFone 4 Pro and ZenFone AR smartphones will receive the update in early 2019.

BlackBerry

BlackBerry's KEY2 will be updated closer to mid-2019, and BlackBerry Evolve and Evolve X will be updated early this year.

HTC

Most likely, only the U-series of HTC smartphones will be able to receive the update: for example, it is expected that HTC U11 Life, U11+ and U12+ will receive Android Pie before the end of 2021. HTC U11 and U11 EYEs, in turn, will be updated in early 2021, and HTC U Ultra - closer to the middle of next year.

Honor

Among Honor smartphones, Honor View 10 and Honor 10 will be the first to receive the new operating system – at the end of this year. And at the beginning of next year it will also be available for Honor 8 Pro, 9 and 9 Lite.

Huawei

It is believed that a number of Huawei devices will receive the Android Pie update. The first on the list to receive the new operating system at the end of this year are Nova 3/3i/2S, Mate 10/10 Pro/Porsche Design, P20 and P20 Pro. And early next year, Android Pie will be available for the Mate 9, P20 Lite, P10 and P10 Plus series.

LG

It is expected that at the end of 2021 we will be able to see Android Pie on LG G7 ThinQ smartphones, as well as G6, V30, V30+, V30S ThinQ and V35 ThinQ. At the beginning of next year, this list will be supplemented with the following devices: Q8, V20, Q7, Q Stylus and Stylo 4.

Motorola

All recently released devices from Motorola will be able to receive the Android Pie update, but not all at once. At the end of this year, owners of Moto X4 Android One, Moto Z2 Force and Moto Z3 Play will be able to enjoy the new version of the OS. They will be joined by the Moto G6 and G6 Plus, Moto X4 and Moto Z2 Play in early 2021. And already in the middle of next year, Android Pie will be available for Moto G5 Plus and Moto G6 Play.

Nokia

Nokia's new generation manufacturing company HMD Global has promised that Android Pie will be available for each of their devices. Obviously, the Nokia 7 Plus, which was one of the participants in the beta program, will be the first to receive the update. It will then be available for Nokia 5.1, 6, 6.1, 7, 8 and 8 Sirocco towards the end of this year. Devices like Nokia 2.1 and 3.1 will get access to Android Pie early next year, followed by Nokia 1, 2 and 3 in mid-2021.

OnePlus

Thanks to the participation of OnePlus 6 in preliminary testing, owners of these devices will also be able to become happy users of Android Pie very soon. The new operating system will be available for OnePlus 5 and 5T at the end of this year, and for OnePlus 3 and 3T at the beginning of next year.

Samsung

Samsung does not plan to update any of its devices until 2021. Devices from the Samsung S9 line will be the first to receive Android Pie early next year. The Note 8 smartphones, along with the S8, A8 and A6 series, will be updated in the middle of next year, and in 2021 Android Pie will be available for the S8 Active, J4, J6 and J8.

Sony

The first among Sony smartphones to boast of an update to Android Pie will be the Sony XZ2, since this particular device took part in beta testing. By the end of 2021, the list of devices updated to Android Pie will be replenished with XZ2 Compact and Premium models. At the end of this year, the update will be available to owners of Sony XA2, XA2 Ultra, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact devices, and at the beginning of 2019 - Sony XZ Premium and XZs.

How to install Android Pie Beta

Below are instructions that will help you easily install Android Pie beta on a suitable device:

  1. Open your browser and go to g.co/androidbeta.
  2. Scroll to the Eligible Devices page (Section “Which devices qualify for the Program”) and click on the blue “Register for the Program” button.
  3. Confirm that you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the agreement, then click “Join the Beta Program.”
  4. Click "OK" to confirm your device will join the beta test. An OTA update will be available to you soon.
  5. A notification that an update is available to you may appear within 24 hours (however, it is worth considering that it will not appear if you have ever manually made any changes to the operating system of your device before). If you haven't received the notification, check your Internet connection and also go to Settings > About phone > System update and check if there is information about available updates.
  6. When the notification arrives, click “Download and Install.”
  7. In the window that opens, information will appear that you are going to install a trial version of Android on your device. Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi, then click "Download".
  8. You can now install Android Public Beta. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen to complete the process.

How to exit the beta program

Removing Android Beta is as easy as installing a beta program. You simply go to the Android Beta Program page at g.co/androidbeta, select the required device from the list and click on the “Disable” button. However, please note that once you do this, all your user data will be deleted.

Nokia

Nokia surprised many by announcing that it would henceforth release phones with Android One. The list already consists of this year's phones, in addition to the Nokia 1, which runs Android Go. However, HMD has promised that even the Nokia 1 will be updated to Android P, which means all current Nokia phones will get Android 9 and some, like the Nokia 8 Sirocco, are expected to receive the update around the same time as Google Pixel.

Smartphones that received Android 9

Google backgrounds

Google Pixel 3

All Google phones were the very first to receive the Android 9.0 update, starting with the test alpha version, released in May. Only the Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL will be available with this version of the operating system out of the box when they launch in October.

Sony Xperia XZ3

At the time of writing, this is the first smartphone that not only received an update, but comes with Android 9 Pie installed right out of the box. The new product was presented at the international technology show exhibition IFA 2021. The device has a premium design that is atypical for this vendor, which has a more rounded shape than the usual angularity.

According to the characteristics, the Xperia XZ3 can offer Snapdragon 845, memory 4\64 GB or 6\64 GB to choose from, P-OLED screen 6 inches with a resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels and Gorilla Glass 5, battery 3300 mAh, Sony cameras 19 MP and 13 MP, and other corresponding flagship filling. The recommended price of the device is $930 (₽63,000).

HTC

HTC has already updated a large number of its phones to Android 8.0 Oreo and is expected to do the same for the upcoming Android P. While we'd love to see the entire HTC U series get the update to Android P, it's unlikely to happen, but of course it is This isn't the last list of HTC phones that will get P. We also don't expect any smartphone outside the U series to get Android P.

Sony

Sony is one of the most consistent non-Google OEMs when it comes to software update issues. This has a lot to do with the company making a big contribution to AOSP, which should help speed up Android P updates even further.

The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact will receive the Android P update this year, followed by their 2021 counterparts, but we don't expect Sony to update the 2021 Xperia X series. On the other hand, we expect the mid-range Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra to receive an update to Android 9 in early 2021. What's even better is that other Sony 2021 phones may come with Android P out of the box.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi doesn't have a good reputation in the world of software updates, but the Chinese OEM is stepping up its game. While we expect Xiaomi devices to be updated to Android P, it is clear that Xiaomi will only update a few 2021 devices, namely the Mi 6 and Mi MIX 2.

Android Oreo will be the last major OS update for Mi 5, Mi Note 2 and Mi MIX smartphone. Additionally, we don't expect the popular Redmi Note 4 series or even the new Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro to get the P update, but you can be sure that they will get Oreo updates.
