How to change the default browser on Xiaomi and install another one

Xiaomi smartphones are becoming more and more popular every year. They are distinguished by relatively powerful characteristics, but at the same time remain inexpensive.

The list of advantages of such gadgets includes the original MIUI operating system and the pre-installed Xiaomi browser. This program provides fast opening of Internet pages, but many users complain about glitches and annoying alerts.

Installation

The MiStore or Google Play applications offer web browsers for downloading. Each of them has a different set of advantages:

  • Yandex. The browser has wide functionality and is considered universal. It is equipped with voice assistant Alice;
  • Google Chrome. The most popular international software. Pages load quickly and crashes are rare. Combines all Google applications;
  • Opera's advantage is its turbo mode, which reduces traffic consumption;
  • Firefox allows you to install various add-ons;
  • UC Browser. The software is suitable for those who like to frequently watch videos from their phone. It comes with a built-in video player that can play the video stream instantly.

After selecting a program, you need to download and install it. The process is simple, just follow the prompts.

The preparatory work is done, and all that remains is to change the default application.

Browsers suitable for Xiaomi

In addition to the standard browser, Xiaomi smartphones are capable of supporting a huge number of third-party browsers. The most popular of them are:

  1. Yandex browser. A very functional application for searching information. It features a built-in voice assistant “Alice”, which, after the command “Listen, Alice”, is ready to receive speech and then search for spoken queries or immediately voice answers to them. Yandex.Browser has well-established support for all necessary add-ons. There are not many of them, but they are all extremely functional and can satisfy the various needs of users.

  2. Opera. A browser that is distinguished by its turbo mode, in which traffic consumption is significantly reduced without losing page opening speed. The browser will launch without any glitches on the earliest Xiaomi models. Overall, it's great for watching news.

  3. Google Chrome. Popular among those people who value speed and functionality. It is most suitable for work, combining in its interface all the services from Google, which can be accessed almost instantly. Of course, another trump card is stable operation without lags and quick opening of any pages, including those containing a huge number of pictures.

  4. Firefox. An excellent browser that includes the largest database of add-ons. As an auxiliary tool, you can install any software, including from little-known developers, and thereby take the functionality of the browser to a completely different level.

  5. UC Browser. Perhaps considered the best browser for playing videos. Its built-in video player features instant playback of the video stream and supports rewinding, as well as setting volume and brightness parameters by simply moving your finger over the desired area. This is extremely convenient and will not distract from viewing.

This is not the entire list of applications created for the purpose of searching for various content. The list contains the most popular of them. Other products can be found in the Play Market catalog.

Change browser

To change your default browser, follow these simple steps. In Settings, find All Apps. In the upper right corner, click on the three dots icon and in the menu that appears, select “Default Applications”, then “Browser”.

All that remains is to study the list that opens, decide on the desired program and change it. Use convenient software. As you can see, it is very easy to change.

How to view history in the browser

Sometimes the user needs to go to a page that he has already viewed recently. To do this, you will need to open the history and find the desired item. In a standard Xiaomi web browser, this requires only three steps:

  1. Open the application.
  2. In the settings menu, select the “Bookmarks” item.
  3. Go to the “History” tab.

Links to recently opened pages appear on the smartphone screen, sorted by time of visit. You can view them by scrolling down the list. Here you can clear your history by deleting all information about visited sites, which allows you to reduce the amount of occupied RAM and speed up your web browser.

Disable default browser

It is not necessary to remove the standard MIUI browser. However, users sometimes want to get rid of it.

This cannot be done in the usual way through application management. You will need the ES Explorer program. Pre-download and install on your device.

Now, through ES Explorer, find the System folder in the phone’s internal memory. Click on Priv-app, then remove Browser.

Sometimes the device requires Root rights to perform this operation. If they are not there, then you will not be able to remove the standard MIUI program.

Please note that it cannot be returned. To do this you need to update the firmware.

How to remove Xiaomi Mi Browser freezing?

Various inhibitions in most cases arise in the process of interaction with an impressive number of contributions, which contain many images and data. Therefore, to improve performance, xiaomium.ru offers two methods.

Option #1

It is assumed that you need to install the most current version of the system, so you should open the phone settings and go to the updates subsection. If there is a new software update, a notification will be displayed. It will then take about 15 minutes for the automatic installation operation to complete.

Option No. 2

For another way to optimize the performance of the Xiaomi search engine, you need to go to the settings section and select the “All applications” option, then “Browser” and click on the “Clear” command. Such manipulations will remove all unnecessary data from the cache to significantly improve performance.

Why Xiaomi browser may freeze

Despite the fact that Xiaomi is a fairly reliable gadget, problems may occur in its operation. This is especially true for preinstalled programs.

The web browser may be slow or freeze completely if your phone is infected with viruses. They affect the registry entry and file part of the software, causing problems and slowdowns.

The second reason for freezing may be a software error, for example, a conflict between installed programs and elements of the operating system.

How to disable Xiaomi browser?

Since the search engine, as a rule, does not interfere with the functioning of other services, such functions are used extremely rarely, and to remove it you need to download the ES Explorer program. Once the download is complete, open the “Browser” section and go to the internal memory sub-item.

To remove system services, you must have superuser rights, while to return the browser, the easiest way is to update the software version, after which the utility will reappear both in the interface and in the smartphone system.

Disabling the news feed

Xiaomi phones that support MIUI usually offer Mi browser. It's not bad in itself, but it has serious drawbacks:

  • Annoying news feed;
  • Notifications.

In some cases, disabling all this will be enough for the user to feel happy. When you open the start page, you see news, and each tab will be accompanied by similar “bonuses”.

Unfortunately, there is no button to turn them off, but there are workarounds.

Changing the start page

  • Open Mi Browser, click on the three-line icon. Through the menu, go to “Settings”;
  • Scroll down, click "Advanced";
  • “Set start page”, select “Custom”;
  • Enter a URL. It's better to save it as www.google.com or ya.ru.

Editing hosts

The news page can be removed by blocking certain IP addresses.

For those who have root access, add the following line to hosts:

  • Setting up a Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi 3 router: even a grandmother will understand

127.0.0.1 api.brs.intl.miui.com

For those who do not have root access, but have a content blocker (for example, Adguard), we add the following rule:

||api.brs.intl.miui.com^

Change region

This method involves changing the region, where advertising, news feeds and non-deletable bookmarks are simply not supported.

Go to Settings > Advanced settings > Region and select any CIS country, for example, Belarus.

How to set up the start page in Opera: instructions

The start page, also known as the home page or main page, is the page that the browser goes to by default when it starts.

The user can configure the program so that exactly the start page that is most interesting to him is displayed.

Similar settings are similar in different browsers, but there are still certain differences. Let's look at how to put the desired site on the start page in the latest version of the Opera browser.

Alternative to start page

By default, when you open the browser in Opera, the so-called express panel appears, which is also known as the visual bookmarks page. The last name especially accurately reflects its essence - it displays small rectangular widgets with thumbnails of the user’s favorite resources. When you click on one or another rectangle, you go to the site depicted on it.

It would seem that this is quite convenient, because when starting the browser, the user can immediately choose where exactly he wants to go. But some still prefer to install something fixed.

  • Firstly, many users always start working with the browser from a specific site, for example, they check their mail on Yandex/Google in the morning, read news on Yandex/Google, and so on. In this case, the express panel forces them to make an extra click.
  • Secondly, there are special sites that allow you to create, using a special designer, an optimal start page for the user, which will suit you even more than the express panel. Previously, Google had such a convenient service, but now, unfortunately, there are only solutions from smaller sites, like start.me or top-page.ru.

In any case, the user may have reasons to prefer the start page rather than the express panel. But Opera allows you to make even several of them! Therefore, let’s figure out exactly how to choose what you like to open when you launch the browser.

Instructions

Setting the start page according to the user’s wishes is quite simple; to do this, you need to take a few simple steps. The instructions assume that you are using the latest Russian-language version of the browser.

Method 1

Step 1. Click on the Opera menu button. This is a button with a large red Opera browser logo located in the upper left corner of the screen.

Step 2: Select Settings. You can skip the first step and immediately select “Settings” using hot keys. To do this, press the combination Alt+P (from English Preferences, that is, “Settings”). The same window will open.

Step 3: Look for the “On startup” header, which, as its name suggests, determines what exactly happens when the browser starts. Select the sub-item “Open a specific page or several pages”. Next, click on “Set pages”, which is located next to this sub-item.

Reset to factory settings

Every device has a feature called Factory Reset. This option is located in the settings menu. If you use it, the device will return to its original state, as after purchase. That is, all installed applications and settings will be deleted. Only the media library and phone contact book will be saved.

When might it be necessary to reset to factory settings? Smartphone owners use this function when they want to clear the device of clutter and return it to its previous stable operation. How does this apply to default browsers? So, if you want to remove Google Chrome as the default program and not choose anything in return, then click “Return to factory settings.” In this case, when you try to open a document or link, the system will ask you which program you want to use to launch this action. This is how quickly a solution is found in the form of identifying the main browser and disabling it.

Xiaomi's standard browser is MIUI

Since this browser is already built into the shell by default by the manufacturer itself, it would not be entirely correct to postpone it until the end. MIUI is quite easy to use, and also allows you to slightly customize it to suit your needs: blocking windows, displaying the news feed, search, and the like. But that’s not all.

Advantages:

  • High download speed;
  • Saving passwords and synchronizing them with your Google account;
  • Quick access bookmarks on the main screen;
  • Move between tabs using gestures;
  • Scrolling with volume buttons;
  • Convenient location of browser tools.

You can easily compare the speed of the MIUI browser with the speed of the Chrome browser. All page content opens very quickly. The only difference between them is the ad loading speed. In my case, Google Adsense blocks were placed on the sites, as for them, they load a little faster in Chrome, and since most sites place blocks at the top of the page, visually it may seem that the page takes a long time to load. In fact, all the content has long been uploaded below. And this stone can be safely thrown into the garden of Google, which has recently neglected the optimization of the most broadcast advertising.

A big advantage can be considered convenient access to the browser tools; the location of the panel and tool at the bottom of the screen makes it very easy to use, and also allows you to safely navigate between sites, use search and other tools with one thumb. Considering that the diagonal of Readme 5 is 5.7″, then this is simply a huge plus.

Tools available: bookmarking, bookmarking, downloading, video, night mode, additional tools, data saving, update and exit. Reading mode is also activated from the bottom panel, which is also used quite often on mobile phones.

When you open a tab window, the appearance is made in the style of the window of active applications, and you can select the desired window by scrolling the tabs to the left or right, which is also quite convenient.

Xiaomi browser notifications: how to enable and disable?

To eliminate intrusive messages, you need to open the built-in browser and go to the settings category, then scroll down to the “Notifications” section, when selected, a list of sites will be displayed next to which there is a corresponding activity lever. To deactivate notifications, move the slider to the opposite position.

When finished, go back to the phone settings and open the “All applications” category, then select the browser and click on the messages category, in which you can turn off the display of any banners or edit the settings depending on user preferences. To enable notifications, similar manipulations are used with moving the lever to the active mode.
